There are some people who are condemned to rent all their lives; they simply don't want the commitment of owning real estate, no matter how the cost shakes out. I am living in a home with my parents right now and we have all just bought a house. We before were paying them rent to live down in their basement and then someone told us to buy a bigger house with both names on it and then we would be making something for ourselves as well.
